Theodore (Ted) Brautigan

Quote: “They stink up the streets like vermin.”

Background: Theodore, and his twin sister Tabithia, grew up in the era surrounding World War 2.  His parents were of Welsh descent, but Theodore, Tabithia, and their mother lived in London while his father fought the Germans in parts unknown.  During the Blitz, Tabithia was lost and later presumed dead, and his father’s dogtags were sent home in 1943.  After the war, Theodore and his mother emigrated to New York City to start a new life.  Theodore grew up a hardened New Yorker, and the street tempered him to a cold steel during his 30 years of service as a New York cop and detective.  His wife left him because she could not stand his hard line against the cities poor and homeless.  He was very well known on the streets for cracking down on the vagrants.  Later, Ted’s one son died in the war in Afghanistan, and his ex-wife died of breast cancer two years later.  One night out, a few years back, he swore he saw a girl that reminded him so strongly of Tabithia that he started to cry.  That night, and nearly every night thereafter, he would have dreams about Tabithia and the woman he saw.  Sometimes stories in the New York Times were eerily reminiscent of the dreams he had the night before.  Now, he truly believes that the woman he saw is Tabithia or has some relation to his lost sister, and Ted has decided he has to find her or die trying (despite the horrible consequences of such an action foretold by his dreams)

Description: Ted his a hard old man.  He wears slightly fashionable clothes, but his hair is long and usually a little unkempt (much to the dismay of his clean cut police buddies).  His beard usually needs trimming as well.  There are moments when the spark of life shines through, and people see a strong man.  Normally, Ted slouches along as if deep in thought and worry.  He would be played by Anthony Hopkins.

Storytelling Hints:  Ted is an old cop and detective.  He questions everybody (except other cops) like he is on the beat, much to the questionee’s annoyance.  Ted hates the homeless, and he will go out of his way to ridicule them on the streets of New York.  After his son died, Ted has also been fairly prejudiced against Middle Eastern peoples.  With a cop pension keeping Ted bored, Ted loves to “pretend” he is still on the force and “help” the detectives solve crimes.  He will poor over the many newspapers of the city everyday to look for unsolved murders.  Most of his detective work is done on the computer, and he rarely will venture to the scene of the crime.  His efforts to be a retired detective-in-action have redoubled ever since he saw someone that looked like his sister in New York.  The dreams act as guides in aiming his time and effort.
